The University of Florence is today one of the largest organizations for research and higher education in Italy, with around 1,800 faculty members and permanent researchers, more than 1,600 technical and administrative staff, and over 1,600 Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers. The University has campuses in various parts of the city and also outside the urban area, including the scientific campus of Sesto Fiorentino and campuses in Empoli, Calenzano, Prato, and Pistoia.
